Within just 165km from each other, getting from Phuket to Khao Lak is quick and easy. Even if you don’t have very much time, you can easily spend a day over at Phuket before heading for Khao Lak, as there are many travel options for your choosing.

The Three Traveling Options

Generally, the travel options are by bus, minivan, or taxi. Although buses and vans are usually much cheaper, taxis are much more versatile in terms of bringing you directly to your destination.

1. Public Bus

If you love traveling alone or enjoy meeting strangers while adoring the majestic views along the journey, this is the best option for you. Public buses are the cheapest mode of transportation among the three options. They’re known more commonly by the name ‘red bus’ and have air-conditioning to keep their passengers comfortable. Also, the buses are operated quite regularly, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to find a ride.

If you’ve just arrived from the airport, the nearest bus station is approximately 5km away, so you’ll need to find your way there. Once at the station, look for buses that travel to Ranong, Surat Thani, and Takuapa, as these buses all pass through Khao Lak. Be aware that you can’t book these buses in advance, so you don’t have to worry about planning and get to spend more time enjoying the trip.

2. Minivan

If you’re traveling in a group, a minivan will be your best option. It’s much cheaper than a taxi, and yet still offers excellent comfortability and flexibility. Do note, however, that a minivan may take longer to travel compared to a bus because van drivers may drop by hotels to pick up other passengers before starting the journey. With that said, if you need a ride from the airport straight to Khao Lak, a minivan can do that as well.

3. Taxi

If you’re not worried about costs, a taxi is far superior to other modes of transportation in regards to versatility and comfortability. It’s a hassle-free option and great if you’re planning to stop often during the journey.

There are different types of taxis, from the typical sedan to a 9-seater van. Whichever one you choose, you can book them in advance, and they will pick you up from the airport or any specified location and bring you to Khao Lak.

Whichever mode of transportation you choose will depend entirely on your budget and schedule. If you’re trying to save money, do not mind dealing with less space and comfort, and not in a rush, local buses would best suit you. If you’d prefer to have everything planned in advance or you will be traveling in a group, meaning, a taxi is a great option because you will be able to split the cost among your members. If you’re looking for a middle ground or traveling with an even larger group, the minivan is the way to go.
